Hair Perms: Solutions to Hair Perm Disasters

Curly hair is among the most popular hairstyles worn by millions of women all over the globe. From saucy up dos to relaxed down dos, the versatile hairstyle has graced endless runways, photo shoots, formal and informal events, and the usual busy streets. Although the perming process has evolved through the years, making it a whole lot easier and faster, it is still accompanied with a myriad of risks. A number of things can go wrong during the perming that no healthy hair or experienced stylist is spared from the perils of a hair perming disaster. Knowing the different types of possible hair perming disaster and the appropriate solutions can spare both the client and the stylist from all the unwanted hassles.

One of the most common and perhaps the mildest problem associated with hair perming is hair dryness. Some amount of hair dryness is expected after the perming process and it can easily be fixed by thorough hair conditioning before and after hair perming. An inexpensive conditioner or moisturizing hair treatment may be used to get through the first few tough days after perming. For best results, the use of conditioners that are specifically designed for permed hair is recommended.

Another common hair perming mishap is the so-called fishtail which is the result of incorrect winding of hair strands on the curling rod. The cause of this is unsteady hands or inevitable manmade error. This may also be brought about by using incorrect size of ironing rods. This disaster can be described as a bit of straight hair poking out of curls that would have otherwise been fine. The solution to this tiny tragedy is obtaining an appointment with the stylist to re-perm the hair. For hair that is prone to damage, it is advisable to have the second perm for about three days after the initial perm. For a quick fix, a curling iron may also be used to tame the stubborn part and enable it to blend in. If it would not affect the overall haircut the fishtail can be chopped off with a pair of trimming scissors.

Perhaps the worst thing that can occur during the hair perming process is the improper use of the perming chemical which can result in damaged, deformed and unsightly curls or no curls at all. The tangles and brittle hair can eventually lead to hair loss. This happens when the stylist fails to conform to the curling product manufacturer’s instruction with regard to timing and application. Inorder to solve this problem, one can ask the stylist to chop off the irreparably damaged parts or make use of intensive conditioning treatments, depending on the extent of the damage. In the event of burn or allergies to the chemical substance, clients must seek immediate medical assistance.
