Hair Perms: A Guide to the Aftercare of Your Gorgeous Curly Locks

Women step out of the salon, feeling an overwhelming sense of pride for their newly made fabulous locks. After a few hours of sitting at that salon chair, waiting with anxiety and anticipation for the result, they are finally able to snag that particular look that they are aiming for. But who’s to tell how long those fantastic curls would last or whether they will get their money’s worth? While their freshly permed mane may appear just as they have dreamt of for the next few days, it can easily revert to the same old straight and limp look or transform into disastrous kinky tangles. This can, however, be prevented by knowing the proper post care of newly permed hair.

Women who have just undergone hair perming must remember that it is a potentially damaging process, causing hair dryness and weak strands. Sufficient hair conditioning is therefore a matter of great importance. Women must be sure to use hair conditioners that are specifically designed for permed hair as ordinary conditioners have the tendency of over conditioning or under conditioning curled hair. One must also use shampoo that is specially formulated for permed hair since ordinary shampoos may cause early hair straightening.

After washing the hair, it is necessary to handle it gently as rough handling may cause the formation of knots and tangles leading to unsightly split ends. One must therefore avoid wrapping the hair in a towel after bath and consider natural air drying as much as possible. To remove stubborn tangles, it is advisable to make use of a flexible wide toothed comb and start detangling from the ends of the hair then up to the scalp.

Permed hair is very much susceptible to the damages caused by frequent and aggressive styling. It is advisable to coat each hair strand with protectant prior to undergoing any thermal styling procedure. The use of the diffuser for drying and styling curled hair is advised. After styling, it is also advisable to spritz on some perm rejuvenating formulas to add luster and moisture to the permed hair.

It is necessary to maintain appropriate care for the curled locks as they grow. Application of a volumizing product at the roots and blow drying up to the ends of the hair significantly aids in providing the curled mane with sufficient lift. Regular hair trimming every four to five weeks is important in the maintenance of the life of curled locks. Regular shaping also enables easier styling of curled hair. Women with curled hair may return to the salon for a second perm which serves to add volume and vitality to he previously permed mane.
